My Story
I’ve committed to my health, to my peace of mind, and to Committed LLC.
Where it all started on the introductory episode of Should Be Committed.
As you know, 2020 sucked. That year, my whole world changed when an awful case of COVID-19 disabled me. The virus damaged part of my brain stem and caused bilateral trigeminal and occipital neuralgias. Both are progressive with no cure and one of which is known for being the most painful nerve disorder. I've always been an overachiever; why not have my whole head/face hurt instead of just unilateral?
My neurologist told me to lower the stress in my life and to self-care more. This was not something I was used to. In an attempt to keep me committed to my health, I started a YouTube channel called “Should Be Committed.” (Not safe for kids; I swear like a sailor and drink.) I created weekly episodes performing self-care tasks and generally failing at them. Although there is a gap in episodes, you can check them out on the SBC page.
Even with upping my self-care, my future became very uncertain. I was an event coordinator, which seemed like a dream job. I'm an odd duck and love the planning and the stress of events. Not knowing if and when a flare would knock me down, I could no longer work consistent hours and was directed to Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services to help figure my life out. Through the wonderful people there, we discussed possible employment paths. We talked about things that interest me, hobbies, and skills that lower my stress levels. We concluded that I should utilize my crafty skills and own my own business. With my Vocational Rehab and Iowa Self Employment reps, we dove deeper into possible markets that wouldn't be oversaturated. Together, we devised a business plan for a cement-based jewelry shop. These programs helped me throughout the entire startup.
Even though they are as fantastic as they can be, they can’t be my emotional support 24/7. You must have a solid support system to stay afloat when going through this. There have been many tears and doubts. Fortunately, I have wonderful friends and family I can lean on in need. My husband, Nathan, has supported me since day one. His only concern is to help me lower my flare-ups and succeed in any way he can. Shout out to the husband of the decade!
With all these superheroes on my side, I finally got rolling, and the ideas kept coming in. As I continued to expand my jewelry line, I needed trinket trays to accompany the jewelry, and then I had the idea for planters, incense burners, and so on. I had officially branched out to "Jewelry and Home Decor." I'm open to all product suggestions and inspirations. (Hit me up!)
Though it was against my will, I'm happy to be where I am and create mini masterpieces for all of you.
